Tim Keller and The Advent of Humility

24 12 2008

At this Christmas time most of us will have time to stop, reflect and ponder.

In this time can I highlight an article that Tim Keller from Redeemer Presbyterian has written, it wont be a wasted time, unlike much of what we read on the www!

A note to those in education

17 12 2008

At this time of year you will be in the minority if you’re still full of energy.  In my experience, as I have chatted to staff, the Christmas break can’t come soon enough.  There are of course some lovely events that go on around the end of term – nativities, carol concerts, not to mention the end of term coursework to mark or the reports to write.

In this first bulletin I wanted to highlight the work of the London Institute of Contemporary Christianity (LICC).
The Institute was started over 25 years ago, by John Stott.  The aim of the LICC is to equip Christians to have a solid biblical framework of work, rest and play.   To quote Stott, “The Christian needs to be double listening and thus have the bible in the one hand and the newspaper in the other”.
We can so often go to the extremes of either knowing the word without the world or be so absorbed in the world that we have no ears to hear his Word.

As Christian staff there are always challenges along the way, whether that be in the classroom with the children, in the office with the head or at the school gate with the parent.

How are we, therefore, to think biblically about each of these settings?   Or, to put it in a more cringe-worthy way, wwjd (what would Jesus do/say)?   Often it is only as individuals that you can answer this because you know your pupils, staff and parents better than your vicar knows them.

So let’s be that light where there is darkness and be salt that adds flavour to all!

As we stop for a little while over this Christmas period let’s remember the Immanuel who is with us.   Let’s remember not to forget who he is and why he came and let’s remember to thank him!

She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”
All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: “Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel”  (which means, God with us)

Sport

13 12 2008

I love sport, i guess most of us do, whether that’s playing or watching we all have our memories of that first goal scored or that first match that you were taken to.
For me, I can remember my dad taking me to watch Cardiff City in the old second division against Orient (now Leyton Orient).  It was a great game when the bluebirds beat the Orient 4 goals to 2 (in 1981).

I can still remember the man sitting next to me who kept apologising for swearing!  I know, how can this be? At a football match and a Cardiff City fan at that? Well he did!   I can also remember some of the goals and the man who walked ahead of me with his pipe, mmmmm what a smell.

Well today reminded me of all those good things about sport. It rugby this time and not football.
As some of you know I am the Chaplain at Harlequins and one of the perks of this role is that i get to see all the home games and am able to take a guest with me.
Today was a great advert for the game and for sport in general.  The weather was atrocious but the atmosphere, the banter between the home supporters and the away (French) supporters was brilliant and the elation at the end when the final kick of the game secured a win for the Quins was well brilliant!

So next time you wonder about whether to  check out your local footy or rugby game dont um and are, get down to the ground, it beats the (Sky) sports tv show any day.

Come on you Quins!

ps Harlequins beat Stade Francais 19-17

retreat

12 12 2008

Today as a team we have been on a retreat.
The day was spent in a quiet house near Richmond.
It’s a privilege to be able to take a day away and pray, read,  reflect, be silent and plan a little.  This is something I know is vital and yet sometimes I can let slip.
Oh well, I’ve made some private resolutions between me and Him.  Maybe they will bear fruit or maybe they wont leave the moleskine but it was good to put down on paper.  We will see what happens!
Watch this space.

1   Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the east came to Jerusalem, 2 saying, “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”
Matthew 2.1-2

Let’s hope so!

picture-3New Zealand coach Graham Henry has tipped Wales as the likeliest northern hemisphere threat to the Tri-Nations teams’ 2011 World Cup hopes.

Wales ran South Africa close, led the All Blacks at half-time and beat Australia in the November Test series.

Today is the first day of advent, although yesterday was the first Sunday in advent.
To do the advent countdown you can either get one of those fair trade chocolatety ones or if not why not go to the IVP site and do their online one.  Click here
