The Christian message remains unchanged but we believe it's important to convey it in a way that is relevant in the 21st century.
We try to make all our services at St John's easy to follow and to understand. At most of them you will be given an order of service on a coloured sheet of paper, which gives an outline of the service and the words that will be said by the people leading it, and the words that the congregation are invited to use in response. These are printed in bold.
You will also be given a white noticesheet, which you are welcome to take away with you. That has information about the services for that Sunday and the following one, announcements about events that are taking place and other matters, a prayer diary that you can use during the week so that we can share in prayer, and sometimes the words of a hymn or a prayer that we will be using in the service.
All the words of the songs and hymns are projected on to a screen at the front of the church, but if you are behind a pillar, or find it uncomfortable to look up at it, they can also be found in the hymn books. The numbers are displayed on a board at the front of the church.
We do not pass a plate around for people's offerings - there is a bowl at the door which you can use on the way in or out. If you are going to come regularly we encourage people to plan their giving and give in tax-efficient ways. During the 10 am service there is a creche for babies, and usually there are Sunday School groups for children over three. They come back into church for the last ten minutes of the service and show us what they have been doing. Once a month, on the first Sunday of the month, there is a service where the children stay in church all the way through. As we have quite a lot of young children, the service is specially planned with them in mind - but we try to make sure there is something for all age groups!
After the 10 am service please join us for refreshments (Tea, coffee, squash etc in the church hall) .
