Church Warden

Wardens are elected annually by the church membership to help the vicar in promoting the work and witness of St John’s. (To help this Wardens in the Church of England have a number of ‘legal’ responsibilities relating to the running of church services and the maintenance of church property.)

Andy is a retired surgeon who is married to Joan, a retired physiotherapist. They have three children and four granddaughters. He moved to East Grinstead in 1976, the year he first joined St John’s, and has lived in the town most of the time since then.

Andy is truly thankful for the example shown by his parents who were committed Christians. He came to personal faith himself in his mid-teens and met his future wife Joan when they were both students at Guy’s Hospital in London. Andy and Joan’s confidence in the truth and relevance of what the Bible teaches was strengthened during the ten years they spent as members of a large congregation at a church in central London. The importance of personal faith in Jesus Christ was brought alive each week in relevant and challenging Bible-based talks. He is still passionate that understanding and applying what the Bible teaches is vital for both personal and corporate life and witness. He enjoys reading, travel and watching sport and would probably have been prepared to give up a career in medicine if it meant he could have opened the batting at Lord’s or scored a try at Twickenham!
