Colossians at St John’s Online in June & July
This book of the Bible is written to a new church and new Christians. They are like a newly-planted sapling, vulnerable to get blown away or trampled on, to be eaten or for the roots never to get established. Paul wants them to become like a mature oak. This letter is to help them grow to maturity; it’s all about the difference maturity makes.
Chapter 2 says: So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. The Colossians have made a good start, but they must continue to become rooted and established in Christ, to become mature like an oak.
Don’t we often long to be more mature as Christians, not fragile and wavering, nor half-hearted or full of compromise? The message of Colossians will help us on that journey. It will help us develop a faith that is sturdy, not wobbly, growing, not shrinking, practical, not theoretical and centred on Jesus, not on anything else.
Watch on catch-up: If you missed the session on Colossians 1:15-23, you could catch up here.
