Mark opens his gospel with the claim that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. As we spend time in Mark's gospel we'll be seeing what that looks like, what it means, and what following him will involve.
New series of Talks: The Gospel of Mark
Date and Author:
The Gospel of Mark was written by Mark (or John Mark) who was a gospel partner of Paul and Barnabas’ (Acts 12:25) and also spent time with Peter (1 Peter 5:13). Mark was the first gospel written and was likely written in the mid-late 50s AD, approximately 20 years after the events it records. Early church tradition holds that Mark’s account relies on Peter’s recollections of Jesus’ ministry. Though not mentioned in any of the gospels, it’s entirely possible that mark witnessed parts of Jesus’ ministry himself, many believe that the young man Mark mentions in Mark 14:51-52 is Mark himself.
Purpose:
Mark spends the first half of his book (chapters 1-8a) showing that Jesus is who he says he is in the opening verse of the book – The Messiah, the Son of God (1:1). In this section we also see a motif known as the Messianic Secret where Jesus repeatedly tells people to keep his identity a secret. This is because, though he is the Messiah, what it means for him to be the Messiah has not yet been made clear. In the second half of the book (8b-16) we see what it will mean for Jesus to be the Messiah i.e. he has come not as a victorious conqueror (as God’s people expected of the Messiah) but as a suffering servant. Of course, Jesus will achieve victory, but it will be through his death. We also see in this section what it will mean for his disciples to follow this kind of Messiah.
